Land of Scott and Border Abbeys : London & North Eastern Railway booklet : cover by Freda Lingstrom : c.1931
For many years after 1923 the LNER issued an annual series of booklets describing the areas of the UK they served in an effort to 'sell' railway travel to, and within, the destinations. There appears to have been roughly 12 seperate booklets - and most years the series appeared with cover designs by Freda Lingstrom. Dating the series, or the various 'editions' and cover sequences is almost impossible as the Railway were careful not to date them!
In terms of design, Lingstrom seems to have been commissioned to undertake various subjects loosely associated with the area covered, and to produce various 'series' of styles of design. In addition the use of colour appears to have varied - in line with costs I suspect - ranging from quite complex multi-colour to simple black on coloured card. Lingstrom (1893 - 1989) trained as an artist and did a wide range of advertising for transport companies such as railways and shipping. She is however best remembered for her career in Children's TV at the BBC where she developed such programmes and characters as Andy Pandy!
This edition features a rather bolder 'candy stripe' approach - of Sir Walter Scott, with laurel wreath borderm crowning him as laureate. Tours to Abbotsford, his home in the Borders, along with the string of Abbeys in the surrounding valleys were popular tour destinations the LNER publicised.
