Pre-Worboys road direction sign, The Stow, Harlow New Town, Essex - April 2016

Harlow was designated a 'New Town' in 1947 - part of the post-war redevelopment of Britain and as an overspill for blitz-damaged and slum ridden London. So, over the next three decades this once rural parish in Essex became an urban centre and this rather fine survivor of the first phase of the new town gives directions to some of the earlier housing areas. Amongst the street and scheme names are several by notable post-war UK architects - Pennymead by Graham Dawbarn and Orchard Croft by Frederick Gibberd, the man who was the consultant architect to the Development Corporation and who is, arguably, the father of Harlow.
