"The wise buy Wheatsheaf footware..." advert issued by the Co-operative Wholesale Society, 1949
Back in the days when the Co-op was an almost vertical producer and seller - an advert for the Co-op's own footware, Wheatsheaf brand and that were made in the Wheatsheaf Works in Leicester. The factory opened in 1891 and was, I'm told, the largest footwear factory in the world. The building actually survives, despite the Co-op having been out of show manufacturing for many a long year, and is currently being redeveloped as it is a Listed (protected) building. The advert also pushes the use of another CWS product - Pelaw Polish, this made at the CWS's Tyneside factory that produced polishes and brushes.
