Balham tube station disaster commemoration, the Mayor of Wandsworth - October 14 2015

Today marks the 75th anniversary of one of the worst wartime disasters on the London Underground - the Second World War bomb disaster that saw at least 64 shelterers and LT staff perish when a bomb that hit the High Road above collapsed the platform tunnels, deep below the street, that were being used as an air raid shelter. The impact of the bomb caused the many water, sewer and gas mains to fall into the tube tunnel with the consequent flooding of the platforms with liquid slurry and debris. Our local staff, with help from HQ staff, have commemorated the event - with visits from local schools who learnt something behind this awful day in local history and the station was also visited by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Nicola Nardelli seen here ascending the escalators on here return to the ticket hall.
