Raja Asad Hameed was a senior investigative reporter and was engaged with the beat of crime reporting and court reporting. He was killed by the assassins, as he reached his house in his car after leaving his office, which caused his death on the spot.

A large number of journalists participated in the protest and raised anti-government slogans for not taking any action over the series of murders taken place during the last couple of weeks.

The participants of the rally demanded government to take immediate notice of the murder of Raja Asad Hameed and other murdered journalists who killed while performing their duties dedicatedly.

The protestors said that such cowardly acts of target killing by the agencies could not discourage journalists for writing truth and they would continue presenting the actual facts despite the continuous pressures by the government and agencies.

They said it was the time that government should announce the investigation of Raja Asad Hameed’s murder case in order to curb such cases in future.

While addressing to the participants President Press Club Tariq Chaudhry warned government of long march saying that the journalist community would no longer stay silent over such barbaric killings of their fellows.

“The long march of lawyers stopped at Gujranawala but our long march would only end in the houses of the government,” he threatened.

Chaudhry said that they were giving government a deadline till Monday to take action against the killing of Asad otherwise they would hold series of protests and rallies country in order to get justice. “The only purpose behind such killings is stop journalists from performing their duties and preventing them from writing truth,” he asserted.

Press Club Secretary Afzal Butt on the occasion said that the target killing of the journalist has become a routine matter while the government seemed unaware of it.

“Not a single culprit behind such cases has ever been brought to trial which shows that government itself is not interested in pursuing such cases,” he said. It is also worth mentioning that dozens of shiny vehicles belonging to our honourable ministers passed the protestors but none of them came to express his solidarity with the aggrieved journalists’ community.
