Ephesus- Library of Celsus
This library is one of the most beautiful structures in Ephesus. The library was completed in 135 A.D. as a monumental tomb for Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a Roman Senator from Greece who was governor of the province of Asia (and who is buried in a sarcophagus beneath the floor at the main entrance) by his son. With 12,000 scrolls, it was the third largest library of its time after those in Alexandra and Pergamum. Scrolls were kept inside cupboards located in niches along the library's double walls to protect them from extremes of temperature and humidity. All books and building (except its facade) were destroyed in 262 by a fire that followed a major earthquake.
