Kirishima was sunk on 15 November 1942, during the fighting for Guadalcanal, by gunfire from US battleships Washington and South Dakota This was the last, indeed, the only time US and Japanese battleships came within range of each other's big guns, and was the last big-gun duel the US Navy fought.
