PROVENANCE: -
Dr. Anne Margreet As-Vijvers of the Department of Art History, University of Amsterdam has identified these leaves as being from a Book of Hours that included miniatures that can be attributed to Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, a Carmelite Nun from a convent in Bruges and the date is about 1510/1520. She was a nun of the Carmelite convent of Sion at Bruges and had entered the nunnery by 1495 and took her vows in 1501. She is recorded as having illuminated many manuscripts including multiple Service books for her own abbey as well as other devotional books and miniatures.
Manuscripts previously attributed to the Master of the Van Hooff Prayer Book have also been identified with Cornelia van Wulfschkercke by Dr. As-Vijvers.
GENERAL COMMENTS: -
Whilst there is a small loss of vellum to a corner of two of the leaves, these are nice leaves from what must have been a superb and expensive Book of Hours. They show only a minimal amount of age related wear.
