French Pass

Crossing the French Pass (5370 m) with the hulking mass of Dhaulagiri looming above, swept by high-altitude winds. The bloke at the front is carrying a table & chairs so that the pampered western trekkers (us) could sit down to have breakfast. When we said we didn’t want anyone to carry a table & chairs over a 5000+ metre glaciated pass just so we could sit down for breakfast, the sirdar said OK, we’ll sack the porter then. The porter was not happy. So we said OK then, we’d have breakfast sitting down. We’d have happily just let him come along and get paid for carrying nowt but then there would probably have been a porter strike. So that is why a bloke carried a table & chairs over the French & Dampus passes like some kind of surreal high-altitude removal man.
