My job at the summer institute for teachers was to demonstrate how it'd be possible to take students for an "art walk" (in the woods or in the city), bringing along a small collection of simple materials: a plastic shopping bag to tote materials in and to sit on (!), a pencil, an eraser, colored pencils, a viewing frame (an index card with a rectangular hole cut out), a clipboard and some drawing papers (or, if you have the funds, a sketchbook).
Each person picked a spot, selected a "scene" to draw with the help of the "frame," and went to work.
