Monckton Coke Works - 2013
The coke works closed in December 2014 the year after this photo was taken. It marked the end of 140 years of coal mining and coke production on the site. The first coke works on the site were constructed by the owners of Monckton Colliery (later New Monckton). Shaft sinking began in 1874 and coal production in 1878, and the first coke ovens started production in 1879. Although New Monckton Colliery was progressively developed to a mine with six shafts, the National Coal Board (NCB) closed the colliery on economic grounds in 1966.
The coke oven structures in the photo date back to the mid 1970s when 42 ovens were installed.
