The Cod & Lobster
My first visit to Staithes would have been in early 1976 on a wintery Sunday morning geology field trip from university. The focus of the trip was obviously (for our lecturer!) to see the geology of the cliff faces to the left of this photo, the fossils in the rock and evidence of the areas history of ironstone mining. Apart from one of the lads getting admonished for breaking rocks close to the cliff face (not a good thing then or now), my abiding memory is of retreating to the warmth of Cod & Lobster for lunch; fish and chips what else!
It was a lot quieter than it was on our last visit, or indeed on others in the intervening years. Busy or not, the village is one of the iconic locations on the North Yorkshire coast.
