Fixing the roof at Wentworth Woodhouse

I had planned do Wentworth House's roof top tour earlier this year. The weather wasn't great after New Year so I thought I'd leave it until the end of March when the weather would be better. Then came the Covid-19 lock down and the work and tours were put on hold. Work has restarted and fortunately Wentworth House has been able to accommodate roof top tours for those that were cancelled when lockdown started.

The central section of the mansion is encased in a massive scaffold structure and wrapped to provide a weather proof covering over the roof. All the original slate tiles have been removed, roof timbers repaired and new slate tiles fitted. The copper sheeting on the flat roof sections is being replaced by lead in keeping with the house's original 18th century construction.

The current phase of work finishes in the summer so this was a great chance to see an 18th century mansion house roof close up.
