Snowshill-24

Snowshill Manor and Gardens, National Trust, Snowshill, Gloucestershire.

The home of Charles Wade and his collection of items that he saw as records of vanished handicrafts. Wade had inherited his family's sugar plantation in St Kitts in 1911, and the income enabled him to give up work as an architect and devote his time to his passion for collecting.

Charles Wade bought Snowshill Manor in 1919 after seeing an advert for the house in Country Life whilst serving in the army during World War 1. The manor house was home to Wade's collection, and he lived a simple life in the adjoining Priest's House when not at his estate in St Kitts. Charles Wade died in 1956 and had gifted the house the National Trust a few years earlier.
