Cuenca, Spain

With a population of just under 60,000, Cuenca is a provincial capital in the autonomous region of Castilla La Mancha, situated about 150km south-east of the capital, Madrid. Built by the Moors in a defensive position at the heart of the Caliphate of Cordoba, Cuenca is an unusually well-preserved medieval fortified city and, not surprisingly, has UNESCO World Heritage status. Conquered by the Castilians in the 12th century, it became a royal town and bishopric endowed with important buildings, such as Spain's first Gothic cathedral, and the famous 'Casas Colgadas' (hanging houses), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river. Taking full advantage of its location, the city towers above the magnificent countryside. It really is a true delight to visit, although in winter and at an altitude of 946m, it can be very cold! There are plenty more photos of Cuenca and other Spanish towns/locations if you take a look at my 'Albums' page, www.flickr.com/photos/36623892@N00/sets/ - thank you.
