Elvis Presley Grave May 28 1978

I had heard on the news that Vernon Presley was allowing the public to view the grave of his son on Memorial Day Weekend, 1978, nine months after Elvis's death. I had just begun a lengthy road trip, was passing through Memphis late in the afternoon on Sun May 28, 1978, and though I wanted to keep traveling into the evening, wondered if I could quickly find the home of Elvis. It was still a residence at that time and not on the map, commercialized, or open to the public. I stumbled across Elvis Presley Boulevard and it seemed logical the home must be there somewhere. When I saw the people crossing the busy street and then the music-note gates, there was no question about it. Elvis's uncle Vester was at the gate talking to some of the visitors assembled there. Groups of people were allowed to walk up the winding driveway (though warned to not walk off of it), past the pool, and into the Memorial Garden.
