Croton mubango Müll.Arg. (EUPHORBIACEAE)

Nbangu nbangu, saku (Kikongo)

A bush or small tree from 3 to 15m high.

The flowers are a valuable bee forage, produced from July to September. Bees were seen very active in the early morning, probably collecting pollen. Honey of some species of Croton is dark amber and strongly flavoured (Crane 1975). Croton spp. are important bee forage in the equatorial and savanna zones in Africa (Hepburn & Radloff 1998). The bark and leaves are used as a condiment in Bas-Congo (De Wildeman 1934, Daeleman & Pauwels 1983, Pauwels 1993).
