Gas prices Vancouver Island

Because fuel has to be imported to Vancouver Island, it's comparatively expensive. Vancouver Island is a car-oriented culture. The population is low density with a few urban centres - Victoria and Nanaimo having public transit. You need a car to get around and distances can add up.

Hard to comprehend these North American fuel prices from $1.96 to $2.16 a litre. It roughly converts to about $5.00 a US gallon. Given that North America has a lower population density then say Europe, getting from place is getting really expensive.

Keep in mind that North America was designed as a car-oriented culture post 1945. While inner cities are usually well-served with public transit, the overall metropolitan areas are low-density with poor public transit options compared to other continents. In the suburbs, major thoroughfares tend to have acceptable public transit, but the residential areas are poorly served - Bus service is every 30 to 60 minutes, except during rush hours.
