Gotham - Season 2, Episode 4 - "Strike Force"
Barnes forms a task force with help from Gordon; Penguin is kept busy trying to fulfill a favor for Galavan; and Nygma asks Kringle out on a date. Damn, this might be the best episode of the season so far, the writing has taken a considerable jump up in quality. The episodes thus far have been average to decent for me, with some ups and downs in between. What they did with Jerome was just frustrating and tedious. But with him gone, that can actually make the show better.
The introduction to this episode, the 15 minutes before the title reveal was pretty fantastic. Michael Chiklis as Capt. Barnes is a much needed kick in the ass for the show, dude just strolled into the Gotham CIty Police Department and pulled a Gordon...but much better than Gordon. Made quite the dramatic entrance. Now I will say, his acting in this first scene is a bit shaky for me, or maybe its just the dialogue they gave him. But he really gave a speech Gordon wishes he could give. However, the one oddity here is that this man showed up, literally, out of nowhere. Who sent him? I will not be surprised if he has a dark turn in the episodes to come.
Implementing the idea of the police academy is just brilliant, of course they would need to get them while they're young. This is a great way to introduce more characters, with some real relevance. However, this direction does feel oddly different than the 3 previous episodes of this season. Seeing Barnes and Gordon at the academy is what I would have loved for the show to have started out as, I'm talking about the tone and idea of that sequence. Making it about the cops, and good police work. The villains seem to have taken over...I prefer the police work.
Even seeing Penguin in the beginning of the episode, having his run in with Theo Galavan, was great. It's the best I've seen him be in a while, and he still remains one of the best aspects of the series, Robin Lord Taylor is still great in the role. And now, with his mother dead, he's got no weaknesses and nothing to lose. This has just made him more dangerous.
I love the idea of Alfred jump-starting Bruce's training by making him jog his way back home from school. Don't know how I feel about him slapping Selina...but she is a murderer. But after Theo introduces him to Silver...Selina just might be the better match for Bruce at this point. Because Galavan cannot be trusted. His whole staged drive-by shooting at the podium...I guess those poorly acted, cheesey sequences are going to continue to happen, as he continues to trick people to fall for him. It's his thing.
This was also a very well-directed episode.
