Stoop Kids - Already Out Of Time

repost from Swurv

Here's some indie pop/R&B-soul-blended dopeness for you today. Stoop Kids - "A love letter between doo-wop and hip-hop." Stoop Kids are a psychedelic jukebox. Influenced by The Talking Heads, Amy Winehouse, Daft Punk, A Tribe Called Quest, The Velvet Underground, and many more. It's a fun mixture of music, folks.

The New Orleans based group began as the brain-child of front man Griffin Dean writing, sampling, overdubbing, and producing in his dorm room. In contrast to the recordings, however, his desire to adapt the sound to a more high energy live show led to the search for a full band. The other members, though fully committed to the vision, naturally brought a diverse set of personal influences to the table. Baritone sax player, Thomas Eisenhood, brings a jazz and funk feel; the bassist, Patrick DeHoyos, supplies a nu-disco and psychedelic style; on keys and guitar, David Paternostro, contributes a progressive, experimental influence; and drummer, Joe Tontillo, provides an indie, surf pop vibe all of which seamlessly work together in a patchwork of musical stylings that is Stoop Kids.

“Stoop Kids are the Rat Pack of the rap game” – Site of Sound (LA)

With the first track, "17:35", that's exactly what we're given. Good vocal harmonizing, with a stylish hip-hop influenced first verse. The next track "me", is just a quick track with some fantastic instrumentation throughout. The sax really gets to blare here, and it's so incredibly genre-bending that even trying to describe it is difficult.

"Velvet Slide", starts with a cool base line, and solid rap flow. Then transitions in a doo-wop style hook with vocal harmonizing. And there's some pretty cool lyricism in this song.

"Tucked In" - is a really dope song with a chilled out vibe, but becomes very stylish with the sweet saxophone. Fantastic beat-break during the first verse. Very playful vocal flow on the second verse on this track.

"Padiddle" has some great vocal melody. Living in the moment life is simple. "Cup" starts with a very rhythmic and fun beat that is quickly juxtaposed with a more somber tempo-break in the instrumentation.

"Happy Birthday" immediately grabs your attention with its blunt lyrics, with dude just straight up verbally ripping a girl apart and dissing her. It's like an anti-love song, "I'm sorry I can't love you anymore" screamed during the hook. Funny thing is, during the verses the singer has a vocal flow/cadence that reminds me of Gambino on BTI. The vocals are raw and it just ends up working within the production, and the song explodes with some great, blaring instrumentation and horns, especially towards the end.

Indeed, overall this is a fun, sonically fascinating project that carved a few new grooves into my brain with it's soundscape and creativity. Check 'em out.
