ADDITIONAL NOTES.
These 45 tonne General Coal hoppers with a 32.5 tonne capacity were built to replace the older vacuum braked and unfitted HTO/HTV fleet and modernise the distribution of domestic house coal. The wagons were built as TOPS Code HBA vehicles with BR long-link suspension and thick leaf springs but this was later changed to Brunninghaus suspension as seen on the vehicle above. To distinguish between the as built and converted vehicles the ones fitted with Brunninghaus suspension became TOPS Code HEA. All were subsequently converted so TOPS code HBA relating to these vehicles ceased to exist but it later resurfaced for HDA MGR wagons fitted with canopy hoods.
With the demise of coal being burnt for domestic heating the HEA fleet largely became surplus by the mid 90's so with a relatively modern underframe but redundant body many were rebuilt for further use. Common conversions have been RBA barrier wagons for Nuclear flask trains, 148 became HSA scrap carriers and BR converted 127 to MEA box open coal wagons and this was carried on into privatisation. Very few HEA's still exist and the few that do have seen use in recent years carrying coke to Scunthorpe Steelworks from Teesside.
