Modern Megafrets meet the Megalithic past at Kitchenhill. Cumbria.

After 13 miles of uphill slog 66 426 has picked up speed on the two mile level straight through Plumpton and is seen passing the Megalithic Lowhouse Standing Stone as it approaches the bends at Kitchenhill where the line resumes its uphill climb to Shap save for a couple of short dips at Penrith.

This DRS operated container train is made up entirely of AAE 'Megafret' twin container flats. Ahaus Alstätter Eisenbahn operate a large fleet of these low deck wagons suitable for 9'6" containers in the UK with both DB Schenker and DRS hiring them from the German private operator. This service 4M44 08.47 Mossend Yard to Daventry Freight Terminal is loaded at the P.D. Stirling's Freight Yard adjacent to Mossend Down Yard with one of the main customers being the Scottish Malcolm Logistics Group. Although running flat out at this point with a 75mph class 4 freight the climb beyond Penrith to Shap summit will reduce the speed to little more than 20-30mph making this train an ideal candidate for electric haulage. Alas the the lack of joined up thinking within the UK Freight industry means no one single operator is about to invest in bespoke electric traction but if they all acted together it would become a viable proposition so until that day its diesel traction 300 miles under the wires.
