ADDITIONAL NOTES.
British Rail ordered a batch of 14 Self Propelled Twin Jib Relayers for track renewals to replace older steam cranes and unpowered relayers in 1976. Plasser & Theurer built this batch in 1977-80 being delivered with wks no's 6501 to 6514. They were allocated RCE plant numbers DB 969044 to DB 969057 which were changed to DRP 78211 to DRP 78224 when the CEPS numbering system was introduced for on track plant. A further batch which were just about identical were ordered from Cowan Sheldons of Carlisle and were numbered DRC 78225 to DRC 78238 being built 1979-80.
These self propelled machines are restricted to 45mph when hauled in a train but can operate at low speed under their own power once on site. Each crane is rated at 7 tonne to allow for uneven lift but as a single unit they are rated at 12.5 tonne total lift capacity. This allows for a track panel of up to 30 concrete sleepers to be lifted.
In the last 10 years this type of machine has fallen out of favour and many are now stored or waiting disposal for the simple reason it needs a track to run on so is only suitable for multiple track lines. It would normally lift a panel then run a short distance and load the panel onto a waiting wagon on the truncated line being replaced. Modern practice sees road-rail machines do the same job and lift directly onto a wagon parked adjacent thus avoiding the dangerous business of running up and down with slung track panels.
