37 690 at Aberaman Coke Works, Abercwmboi.

Freight sector class 37/5 no. 37 690 then allocated to pool FHCC the Cardiff Canton Depot General Coal fleet stands on the MGR loading line at Aberaman Coke Works. The plant was located at Abercwmboi in the Cynon Valley and was served by sidings adjacent to the passenger branch to Aberdare. The train seen here is 6B91 15.06 to Margam Knuckle Yard with coke for Port Talbot Abbey or Llanwern Steelworks. At this time most coke was being tripped to Margam Yard for use in the steelworks at Port Talbot or Llanwern but used to also run to East Moors at Cardiff. Domestic coke was also still being moved by rail in HEA hoppers at this date, they to went via Margam Yard to feed into the Speedlink Coal Network.

The coke works took coal from a variety of local pits over the years but by this date most inbound coal was brought in twice a day by rail from Tower Colliery further up the valley in MGR hoppers.
