The conveyance of livestock and other large animals came to an end on BR in the early 1970's, 1971 for horses and 1975 for cattle. Since the dawn of the railways horses had been carried ranging from cart horses for railway work through to prize race horses going to events. As they were generally accompanied by a groom they were considered passenger rated stock by British Railways so were built to coaching stock standards with carriage lot and diagram numbers. To supplement the pre nationalisation fleet BR built 115 new Horse Box vans in 1957-58 at Earlestown Wagon Works to Diagram 751 and Lot Number 30146, No's 96300-96314. These in effect being Mark I pattern coaching stock but 4-wheel instead of bogie stock. They could accommodate 3 horses and had a compartment for the groom as well as a lavatory and storage for hay and animal fodder.
The wagons/vans had a very short life as by the mid 1960's the movement of horses by train was in rapid decline and many vehicles went to the breakers only 7-8 years old. The last regular workings were generally by trainload rather than additional vehicles on a scheduled passenger train and saw race horses moved from the Berkshire Training Grounds to Newmarket in Suffolk. This traffic ceased in 1971 and all remaining Mark I horse boxes were withdrawn in 1972 with little alternative use most had been cut up by 1973. A small batch from those withdrawn in the mid 60's did survive like the one depicted here which was converted to a Train Heating Boiler Instruction Van. Six vehicles went into departmental use in the late 1960's three of which were converted to train heat boiler vans initially for pre-heating steam heat coaching stock in sidings. Being BR origin vehicles they should have got DB 975xxx numbers but the Eastern Region renumbered them into the pre-1948 LNER origin number range, thus TDE 321099-321101. TDE 321099 depicted here was formerly 96336 and had been withdrawn as a Horse Box Van in April 1966. It's conversion to department use was undertaken later the same year which obviously saw a boiler installed but the horse compartment doors were modified with a pair of BR Mark I carriage windows complete with fan lights.
