0-4-0DE's 'Rutherford' and 'Farady' at Lostock Soda Ash Works, Northwich. Cheshire. 1994.
Brunner Mond Ltd who owned the Lostock Soda Ash Works had three of these Ruston & Hornsby type 165DE locomotives on site for shunting although by 1994 only two were operational as the third named 'Kelvin' (RH 402807/1957) was used as a source of spares. Here 'Rutherford' (RH 412710/1957) and 'Faraday' (RH 402803/1957) are seen outside the locomotive shed at the Lostock Works. Both locomotives were delivered new in 1957 to the Brunner Mond Ltd Middlewich Alkali Works but 'Rutherford' was transferred in 1959 to the companies nearby Winnington Soda Ash Works Then when the Middlewich plant closed in 1962 'Faraday' moved to Winnington as well. The Brunner Mond loco fleet based at Winnington was deemed to be a common user fleet so their locomotives were also used at Wallerscote which was rail connected to Winnington internally. The same was true of Lostock Works east of Northwich but this site had no internal link with the other two and would require locomotives to be moved by road or via British Rail lines under special authority.
