0-6-0DH (HE 9092/1988) at the Caledonianian Paper Mill, Irvine, Ayrshire. Scotland. 1993.
The Caledonian Paper Mill at Meadowhead south east of Irvine was built in 1988 and opened in 1989. It was rail connected from the outset with a 1 mile long branch off the Kilmarnock to Barassie line. Rail facilities were provided on site for inbound timber and china clay slurry traffic and outbound finish paper products loaded from a covered warehouse. To serve railway operations on site Caledonian Paper Plc bought a brand new 0-6-0DH from the Hunslet Engine Co. Leeds. (HE 9092/1988). The locomotive is seen here in the China Clay discharge terminal and seeing as it had to deal with lengthy air braked trains it was provided with a substantial compressor mounted on one end, it also turned out to be a historic locomotive as it was the last standard gauge diesel shunter built at the companies Leeds factory. The mill was served from the outset by the legendary "Silver Bullets" the longest single freight flow in the UK at the time bringing China Clay slurry from Burngullow in Cornwall twice a week. It was conveyed in the iconic stainless steel tanks built for this traffic in 1989 by Société ANF-Industrie at Blanc-Misseron in France. The 26 wagons in the fleet were owned by Tiger Rail Leasing and leased exclusively to ECC (English China Clays Ltd).
