0-6-0DH no.870 (AB 509/1966) at Queenborough Rolling Mill. 1994.

The ship breakers at Queenborough Wharf operational from 1963 and then the steel mill that opened in 1977 at Queenborough saw a steady stream of secondhand industrial locomotives for shunting delivered to the site over the years. From 1977 onward these also worked the Rushenden branch from the Wharf to the Steel Mill. In the 1960's the supply had largely been redundant former BR shunters mostly class 03's and 04's then with the run down of the UK coal mining industry in the 1980's secondhand ex NCB (National Coal Board) locos were the preferred option before the final chapter in the mid 90's saw an influx of former military service locomotives with the ending of the Cold War. The ex MOD locos were obviously in pristine condition and well maintained and they worked until the site closed in April 2010.

Here no.870 (AB 509/1966) a former BAOR (British Army of the Rheine) locomotive that arrived with four others in May 1994 is seen at the rolling mill scrap bay in Queenborough. This 310hp shunter had spent its military career working at RAF Gütersloh in West Germany.
