800mm gauge SMR 0-4-2RT locomotives no.4 & No.7 at Llanberis SMR Depot, Wales.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway was built to metric specification as the locomotives ordered to work the line were at the time a standard design being built by SLM at Winterthur in Switzerland. Several European lines already operated locomotives of the same type incorporating the Abt rack and pinion system.
The SMR steam fleet falls into two types; numbers 1 - 5 built in 1895-96 are the older model as seen in the loco on the left with No.4 named 'Snowdon'. Whilst the improved younger version built in 1922-23 represented by No.7 named 'Ralph' is on the right. These tank engines are pure rack locomotives and no wheels are driven all adhesion and motion being gained through the rack and pinion hence the requirement for the toothed centre rail even on level track as seen here in the depot at Llanberis.
