04-0DE No.7 (RH 499435/1963) at Barrington Raw Plant, Barrington Cement Works. 1991.
0-4-0DE No.7 (RH 499435/1963) digs in hard as it tries to shift a fully laden rake of chalk tipplers into the the Raw Material Plant at Barrington Cement Works. Although linked this part of the internal railway was operated largely as a separate entity to the cement works itself and the Barrington Light Railway which was a private branch line linking the works to the BR Cambridge to Royston line at Foxton.
The Chalk Pits Railway had started out as a 2ft gauge operation in 1927 but by the early 1960's was no longer able to deal with the volume so after the Rugby Cement Co. take over in 1962 the chalk pits railway was modernised with a new quarry face and standard gauge tracks installed as seen here.
