Plasser & Theurer GP.TRAMM no. DX 98217A/B at Ashford CCE Planrt Depot. Kent. 1991.
BR found the single vehicle Plasser & Theurer OBW8 General Purpose Maintenance Vehicle delivered in 1975 a success despite no follow up orders it was followed by its bigger brother the OBW10, with BR ordering 3 in 1982-83.
The OBW10 was what can only be described as a "Super Trolley" being a two car unit with a powered vehicle and trailer encompassing all the latest features like crew cab, crane and large stowage area for materials. It was no surprise under the 1987 regrouping of the DX 68xxx Trolleys these machines were moved to the DX 98xxx General Purpose Machines group. From the outset the OBW10 designation by Plasser & Theurer was purely a model type as BR always referred to them as G.P.TRAMM's (General Purpose Track Repair And Maintenance Machines). They carried a single number with the powered end designated vehicle 'A' and the trailer 'B'. They could run at 45mph and had the ability to be hauled within a train although such moves were rare. So successful was the design that BR placed three further orders between 1984 & 1988 totaling another 18 units. The final order for 9 placed in 1988 saw them delivered with DR prefixed numbers (DR 98213 to DR 98221) thus being reportable on TOPS.
DR 98217A+B (Plasser 53194/1988) from the final batch is seen here being fueled from a drum in the Workshop Yard at Ashford CCE Plant Depot.
