A 'Taigatrommel' at rest on Dresden Neustadt depot.

Taken : 19.01.1994.

When East and West Germany were unified the railways DB and DR ran as seperate entities for a couple of years. East Germany (DR) had large fleets of Russian built uneconomic diesels the worse offenders of which were the V200's ex DR class 120's which were renumbered 220's to avoid a class with DB class 120 electric locos. Here 220 336 sits in the cold night air at Dresden Neustadt depot. These locos were built in very large numbers by the Oktober Revolution Locomotive Plant in Lugansk in Russia and were heavy drinkers of diesel fuel so the fleet of 378 locos was a very early casualty of unification. They were known to German enthusiasts as 'Taigatrommel' which transplates to Taiga Drummer named after a place in the far East of Russia where locals beat drums which sound similar to the drumming throb these machine make when under load.
