Strokkur Geyser, Geysir, Iceland.
The Strokkur Geyser erupts at frequent intervals of around every five minutes. The whole in the earths crust is filled with water heated to around 125ºC just below the surface and laps up out of the ground into a pool before forming a large blue dome of boiling water and steam that then bursts shooting it all 30 meters skyward. Visitors are warned not to stand down wind but there are those who just don't listen and while I was there several people got a very hot shower as there is no fence to speak of other than a low rope cordon to prevent the unwary from stepping in a pool of boiling water. The Icelandic people believe you should have the common sense not to get too close and therefore don't need a fence. I tend to agree with them, its Darwin's theory of evolution and weeds out the stupid among us. It is a spectacular site if you can put up with the smell of hydrogen sulphide which blows out from other vents as steam giving the whole area an aroma of rotten eggs.
