New class 455/7 no.5733 at York Works. 15/09/84.

Just waiting for a visit to the paint shops newly completed class 455/7 EMU no.5733 is seen in BREL York Works Yard.

In the tradition of coding Southern Region EMU's the new class 455/7's were to be designated 4-HIT which I believe stood for "High capacity with Intermediate Trailer" although if anybody knows different I would be pleased to know.

The class 455/8 fleet (no's 5801-74) had been built prior to these between August 1982 and January 1984 and they received no BR-SR unit classification which is probably why the 4-HIT classification allotted to the 455/7's was never applied or referred to in traffic. The 455/7's were the follow on build being constructed between April 1984 and December 1984 but assembled as three car sets as they received the spare 'TS' Trailer second from class 508 EMU's being moved from the Southern Region to Merseyside. Technically the 455/7's were the same as 455/8's but they did have a revised front end which was also used for the 455/9's and the motor bogies were different. In service they were readily identifiable by the flat roof ex class 508 trailer inserted in them.
