DMU set L411 leading at Dereham, Norfolk. 1985.

In rapidly fading light the Hertfordshire Railtours 'Anglian Vibrator' railtour is seen during a photostop at what was once Dereham station on the Mid Norfolk line. The line once extended through to Wells-next-the-Sea and had lost its passenger service from Norwich in two stages, Wells to Dereham went on 05/06/1964 and Wymondham to Dereham on 06/10/1969 but the line from Wymondham Junction to Fakenham was retained for freight traffic. This then shut in stages first Fakenham to Ryburgh in 1980, then Ryburgh to North Elmham between 1980-85 and finally North Elmham to Derehham in 1989. The remainder of the branch through to Wymondham Junction being mothballed at the same time in 1989. The line now enjoys a new lease of life as the Mid Norfolk Railway opened by enthusiasts in 1993 and Dereham is their centre of operations.

This DMU tour was a seven car formation comprising Western Region sets L411+L121+L412 and ran as train 1G30 07.35 London Kings Cross to London Kings Cross covering primarily the Wisbech and North Elmham freight branches. The 16 mile North Elmham branch from Wymondham taking 3hrs 10mins to cover out and back because of the multitude of manual crossings operated by the traincrew.
