308 453 at Walton-on-Naze. 8/8/85.
The class 308 units were introduced in 1961 and fell into four sub classes catering for different formations or configuration within the class. By far the smallest batch were the Class 308/3 sets which were 3-car units as opposed to standard 4-car sets and were numbered 308 453 to 308 455. They were ideally suited to the branch shuttle between Thorpe-le-Soken and Walton-on-Naze as 3-cars were more than adequate for this branch. They had originally been built to supplement the class 305 suburban fleet which also had the same English Electric power control equipment.
Here set 308 453 is seen at Walton-on-Naze soon after arrival with train 2B34 the 12.59 from Thorpe-le-Soken. It will return to Thorpe-le-Soken as service 2B39 at 13.37. By this date the unit only had another six months in service being withdrawn in February 1986 and broken up at Mayer-Newman's Ltd, Snailwell in March 1986.
