DR 220 298 at Pegau, East Germany.

These standard Russian built type M62's were common throughout the former Soviet block and Eastern Europe but after German unification and then amalgamation of DR and DB to form DBAG the new combined German Railway authorities were quick to dispose of them as uneconomic and surplus to requirement. Deutsche Reichsbahn had operated a fleet of 378 but within a couple of years of unification the whole class were withdrawn. The V200 (or class 120, later 220) are commonly known as Sergi's in other countries but in Germany the nickname "Taigatrommeln" was given to them which roughly translates to Taiga Drummers because of there distinctive exhaust beat.

At first light on a cold January morning 220 298 (ex 120 298) is seen stabled at Pegau with a loaded coal train from one of the nearby Lignite (brown coal) opencast pits. The loco only had another 10 months in service being withdrawn from Leipzig Wahren Depot in November 1994.
