771 017 + 771 029 at Peenemünde Dorf. 25.01.95.
One of those places you read about in the history books when at school but never expect to visit. This little station at the northern end of the island of Usedom is located in an area with a very dark past. Peenemünde was where the German Nazi party developed and tested the V weapons during the latter part of World War II. The V1 flying bomb and V2 rockets were born here. Concrete installations long since abandoned were still to be seen in the woodland beside the line no doubt not worth the cost of demolition. There was a small museum dedicated to the rocket test centre but a very low key affair in Peenemünde village. Since this was taken the rail bridge onto the island from the mainland has been rebuilt at Wolgast and the islands train services are now operated by UBB Usedomer Bäderbahn GmbH with through trains to Züssow on the Berlin to Stralsund mainline.
I had gone to the Island in January 1995 with friend Phil Richards to sample the one and two coach loco hauled trains with class 201's but shortly before our arrival the entire service had been replaced by DB with refurbished class 771 railbuses. Here 771 017 and 771 029 are waiting to leave Peenemünde Dorf with the 13.06 to Zinnowitz.
