'Ludmilla' 234 346 at Berlin Zoo. Germany
Once the principle station in West Berlin, Berlin Zoologischer Garten lost some of it importance after unification but still retained a good service being located on the Stadt Bahn through the city centre. It eventually lost status further to the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof located at what was Lehrter Stadt Bf in the former East Berlin. What was originally Berlin Hauptbahnhof located in East Berlin in 1993 subsequently became Berlin Ost.
One of the modified class 232 'Ludmilla's no. 234 346 is seen waiting time at Berlin Zoologischer Garten Bahnhof with train E3508 21.03 Berlin Hbf to Magdeburg Hbf. After unification it was found the DR class 232's ETH (Electric Train Heating) rating was inadequate for newer Inter-City coaching stock in use in Western Europe so DR set about converting 64 of the locos to cope with the new trains crossing what was East Germany to the historic capital, Berlin. The doner class 232's received 140kmh bogies and up-rated ETH but retained their Kolmona 5D49 engines. These rebuilt locomotives thus became class 234 but retained the last three digits of their former 232 running numbers.
