Longwood

Longwood is the largest octagonal house in America, and is located in Natchez, Mississippi. There are LOTS of photos of in on flickr.

This photo shows the roof of the DOME with the silver paint coat that was eventually restored to the current red. It also shows the sixteen 16 foot tall windows of the dome tinned in to keep out the rain. They were during boarded up during the time the Nutt family occupied the house. The tin has now been replaced by large plexi-glass sheets to allow the light to come in and fall down the rotunda. There is a rotunda ( a circular opening down the middle of the house) that extends from the dome to the primary floor.

Beneath the primary (first) floor is the basement. The basement is the ONLY floor that was ever completed, plastered, furnished, and used as a home. The rest of the house remains a hallow empty, unfinished shell.. and the mansion is amazingly interesting. AND it is open for YOU to go visit.

;)
