Ellerslie Plantation-Stairs---1926

This photo was taken by Robert Tebbs in 1926.

Other photos of Ellerslie and other Louisiana plantations may be found in this excellent collection:

Ellerslie is a private house and is not presently open for tours. It has served as a set for several movies, including The Reaping, and The St. Francisville Experiment.

The downstairs hall at Ellerslie is divided in two by the pair of sliding doors shown at the edges of the front of the photo. Each door has 12 panes of colored glass.

The stair swoops upwards in two flights to end at a landing outside the attic storeroom. The staircase is an engineering marvel. It is one of the largest and finest ante-bellum spiral staircases in Louisiana.

The room that contains the stairs/ "the stair hall" is 16 feet wide by 22 feet deep. The front entrance hall is the same dimension. Each section of the central hall has two rooms on either side of it.

For more history see the other photos in this set.
