Oklahoma Buffalo

We took a drive down to the Joseph H. Williams Tall Grass Preserve today hoping to get some pictures of the new babies. The preserve is just a few miles from the town of Pawhuska. We didn't see any young ones, but we did see quite a few bulls like this one feeding in the grass. We all were commenting about how green the land was with all the rain coming down this year.

This tall grass prairies used to cover most of the Midwest. 23,000 acres was preserved here for future generations to see. At one time, there was 17,000,000 acres of grassland in the country. The state also brought in buffaloes to roam freely here with an abundant food supply. There have around 2,500 adult buffalo here at a time. If you've never seen a buffalo in the wild, you should be able to see quite a few of them here.
