Merced National Wildlife Refuge Sunset

I took a drive through the Central Valley today scouting new landscape locations and ended up here. I knew that it would be a majestic sunset when I saw how much water was in the refuge. The water has brought in thousands and thousands of migratory birds. It was a really amazing experience watching them fly around us.

The sandhill cranes come into the refuges this year around sunset. I waited until the sun went down and saw another few thousand swoop down on the refuge. The birds were so massive in size they looked like a dark cloud rolling slowly towards you. The noise they made was so loud you couldn't hold a conversation with the person next to you. But who would want to talk when you have that sight flying around you looking for a place to land?
