Horsetail Falls on Fire, Yosemite National Park

Every February the sun shines perfectly on this wall in Yosemite. At dusk as the sun sets, the wall lights up and looks like it is on fire. Last year there wasn't any snow or water so the falls were dry. This year the recent snows have given life to Horsetail and it is flowing nicely. Tonight the sun came through and lit up the wall.

It was a really interesting experience. One lane on both sides of the valley floor was blocked off to allow the photographers to park. I came up with the Fresno Camera Club and they set tripods to reserve their spots at 9:30 in the morning. The parking lot in this area was almost full at this hour. I went around the park and shot at different locations and came back around four in the afternoon. When I tried to park I had to drive 0.5 of a mile away from this spot and hike back to join them. Now there were around 100 photographers in this area jockeying for tripod space.

We all patiently waited for that window when the sun would put on its show. When I first arrived back, the sky was white with clouds and everyone was nervous that there wouldn't be enough light. Around 4:30 the sky cleared up and at 5:40 the show began. Everyone in the area cheered at the same time. It was really an uplifting experience hearing 100 photographers being that excited. This is probably my best shot of the night. I think in the end nature didn't disappoint us on this night.
