Mono Lake Tufa

We went to the South side of Mono Lake to find a good spot for sunset shots and to shoot the tufas. The wind had picked up in the afternoon and the shoreline was getting pretty good sized waves for a lake. The tufas are formed under water when calcite mixes with carbonates in the water. They are actually a form of limestone. This area should be in the water but the city of LA has been taking water from the Eastern Sierras and diverting it to their city. This caused the water level in the lake to drop and expose the tufas. They are slowly getting the water level back up but it is still pretty low.
