47540 Newtown Sidings (742-2)
47540 runs down Miles Platting Bank with a York to Manchester Victoria train. The area behind the train is the top end of Newtown sidings In the 1860s an engine shed was located here and for many years a turntable was situated in the space behind the loco, a reminder of the shed long after it disappeared. The sidings were reorganised in 1896 when the line was widened to four tracks. Evidence of the widening can be seen in the brickwork in the background bridge.
