The Regimental cypher on the front of this stein is the same one that was on the blue regimental shoulder board when this stein was made in 1901. Red Crown over red VM, were the initials of the Regimental Chef Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine - Victoria Melita, her husband the Grand Duke appointed her as the First Chef of the Life Infantry Regiment "Grand Duchess" (3rd Grand Ducal Hessian) Nr.117 from 04 Sept. 1897- 15 Jan. 1902.
Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, was married to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig Karl Albrecht Wilhelm of Hesse and by Rhein. She was the Grand Duchess of Hesse from 19 April 1894 – 21 December 1901. The Supreme Court of Hesse dissolved the marriage on 21 December 1901. And in January 1902, her title as 1st Chief was withdrawn, and the regiment was awarded the title Großherzogin in memory of Grand Duchess Alice of Hessen, the mother of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. The regimental cypher was changed to a red crowned A monogram for Grand Duchess Alice also placed on a blue shoulder strap.
