Santiago Matamoros
Church of Santiago, Valladolid
Ramiro I, King of León, having refused to pay tribute to the Emir of Córdoba, took refuge in the castle of Clavijo at the advance of the Muslim army. According to Legend, St. James the Apostle appeared to the King in a dream saying that he had been appointed Patron of the Kingdoms of Spain and that he would accompany the King into battle. The next day, in the heat of battle, St. James appeared on a white horse leading the Christian army to victory. Hence his titile, Matamoros, the Slaer of Moors.
