Carex complanata (Hirsute sedge)
Gynecandrous terminal spike, in raging bloom. West Columbia, South Carolina. Despite the common name, this species is only sometimes a little bit hairy. However, the close relative Carex hirsutella (Fuzzy sedge) is hirsute (but not particularly fuzzy).
