Neo-Nazi skinhead graffito, Geary Street between Leavenworth and Hyde, San Francisco
For the meaning of "1488" ,see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words. I'm more upset to see this in the neighborhood than I am to see the people smoking crack. I'm Jewish, and there are a lot of people of color and LGBT people in my neighborhood.
I have reported this sighting to the Southern Poverty Law Center by submitting the link to this page at their website. To report evidence of hate activity in your neighborhood at that site, click to www.splcenter.org/center/contact.jsp, fill out the online form, and select as a subject "Report hate activity in your community". To report actual hate incidents, click to www.splcenter.org/center/petitions/standstrong/ and click on the "Report Hate Incidents". button.
(7/21/09) I have now also contacted the Anti-Defamation League, at www.adl.org/contact_us.asp?s=topmenu. To report incidents of antisemitism, other racism, and other hate-based violence or threats, click on this link, fill out the online form, choose "Other" as "Topic of Inquiry", and fill out "Comments/Questions" box as appropriate.
I do think ADL's and SPLC;s use of the term "extremist" is unfortunate, as some movements seen as "extremist" in their day, such as the Abolitionist movement, proved to be right. I'd have preferred "racist groups" or "hate groups". Also the Medvedev/Putin regime in Russia has been suppressing political dissent there by invoking "anti-extremism" laws. Only some of the dissenters involved have been members of hate groups.
See also www.adl.org/hate_symbols/default.asp for the main page of ADL's index of racist symbols. These include the "Celtic Cross" seen above..
